The World Wide Web did not get that name because it was a purely localized entity. Now, governments are trying to stay ahead of malicious hackers exploiting weaknesses in both software and hardware.
Lately numerous websites have offered their viewers an interactive experience, all in the name of science. From categorizing galaxies, to exploring Mongolia, the Internet has changed what it means to ‘participate’. From the comfort of your own location, it is now possible for the ‘average Joe’ to conduct research, watch some sports, and listen to music, simultaneously. Whether or not this will mean an unprecedented rate of new discoveries, has yet to unfold, but is has the definition of volunteering been reinvented? That would of course depend on whether these projects endure the test of time. With distractions ever present in our connected world, spotting a future hobby from a current trend becomes all the more difficult. As technology evolves, maybe laptop computers will one day become the cassette tape computing. Unless time travel is tried and tested we may have to wait to find out.
